Khau Vai love market festival is convened once a year on the 26th and 27th of the third month of the Lunar Year Khau Vai commune in Meo Vac district of the northernmost province of Ha Giang, is home to ethnic minority groups of Giay, Nung and Muong and it is famous for its love market festival.

A story tells that, once upon a time, a boy with the name BA and a girl with the name Ut were born into two different families, the boy’s family was poor and he came from different tribes with the girl as well, they loved each other very much, but the girl’s family did not agree and prevented their marriage, so they together came to Khau Vai, a prosperous land with rich plants which they could live on.

Things became more complicated later on when violent conflict arose between the two tribes. One day the boy witnessed an aggressive fight between the tribes stemming from their love, as a result the couple decided to fall apart with broken hearts. Still, they promised to see each other once a year on 26th of the third month of the Lunar year in Khau Vai. And since then Khau Vai Love market festival emarges as an occosion for couples of different ages who used to love but could not get married to came and meet each other again.

Nearly a century has passed; still, the festival remains and makes its main claims for a humanity meating.

Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, Chairman of the Meo Vac district’s peopel’s Committee said the festival offers visitors a chance to joind local residents’ daily life, and enjoy traditional foods of local ethnic minority groups and cultural and art activities held in the framework of the event as well.

This taditional love market of Khau Vai is also aimed to promote cultural identity of ethnic minority groups in the locality.

The festival features culinary culture, song performances and also foik games. Ethnic costumes, jewellery, ethnic musical instruments and culture and art publications are on display in the market, reflecting activities of the loval people.

Khau Vai Love market festival is a unique tradition of the northern areas with special and interesting activities. The first day is for the villagers ‘ceremony of receiving the great calendar to forecast of rainfall and foresee the crop of that year. This official ceremony is carried out inside the sanctuory where all participants pray for a good yield. Then, young males and females can walk out to the pagoda yard and join in fun activities. The second day is devoted for the ceremony of boiling rice and heaping up a sandy mountain for search of happiness and luck.
