At the beginning of
Route 1 - Road up Earth's Fecundity, after crossing the majestic Bac Sum Pass
and arriving in Quan Ba Commune, visitors can explore several heritage sites,
both geological and cultural, that are surprisingly associated with origins and
beginnings. One of them is Rocky Mountain Gods - sacred and imposing mountain deities
believed to guard the gateway to the Geopark. This site consists of a cluster
of limestone columns approximately 10 meters high and wide, and 20-25 meters
long. They rise in a remarkably unusual manner from a broad, relatively flat,
and fertile field where local people cultivate maize, rice, and other crops
throughout the year.
Scattered across the
field are smaller limestone tower-like hills, some of which barely protrude
above the ground surface. These are known as limestone residual hills. A field
containing such residual limestone features is called a karst field, and the
entire landscape is a typical representative of the mature stage - the final
stage in the evolution of a karst landscape. Remarkably, throughout the Dong
Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, where limestone outcrops and karst
landforms are widespread, mature karst landscapes are relatively rare and are
found almost exclusively in the Quan Ba Commune area.
Rocky Mountain Gods
differ somewhat from other limestone tower features. They occur as limestone
pillars separated by narrow vertical fissures. It is possible that they were
once part of a single residual limestone block that was dissected by a system
of vertical fractures. Over time, the dissolving action of rainwater gradually
widened these fissures, creating the appearance seen today.
