referred to as the “King of Mountain Passes” in Vietnam, is a spectacular
20-kilometer section of National Highway 4C connecting Dong Van Commune and Meo
Vac Commune. It is also considered the most challenging and heroic section of
the Happiness Road. The pass was recognized as a National Scenic Landscape
under Decision No. 4194/QĐ-BVHTTDL dated November 16, 2009.
The name “Ma Pi Leng”
has been interpreted in several ways, including “Horse’s Nose Bridge,” “Snow on
the Horse’s Nose,” and “Horse Death Slope.” Despite the different explanations,
all of them reflect the ruggedness and dramatic nature of this mountain pass.
From this panoramic
viewpoint, visitors can admire several outstanding landscapes: (1) Tu San
Canyon - regarded as the deepest canyon in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The
canyon reaches depths of 700-800 meters, with near-vertical cliffs inclined at
70-90 degrees and extending for approximately 1.7 kilometers. It is a
remarkable geological feature formed by the activity of the Nho Que River
Fault, which has been active for around 20 million years. (2) The planation
surface and distinctive karst landscapes - including numerous karst towers and
karst cones scattered across the plateau. Particularly impressive are the
extensive erosional slopes stretching along the Nho Que River, rising 500-600
meters above the river and displaying an undulating upper boundary that
alternately protrudes and recedes along the mountainsides. (3) The ancient Meo Vac
Valley - located on a mountainside at an elevation of approximately 900 meters.
It appears as a series of relatively gentle, evenly shaped hills, some of which
are still inhabited today. This landscape is considered a remnant of one of the
oldest river terraces in both the Meo Vac Valley and the Nho Que River Valley.
In addition, visitors can observe many other geological
features, including fault planes, folds, rock pinnacles, and other landforms
that illustrate the long and complex geological history of the Dong Van Karst
Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark.
