This herd of “Sea Lions” suggests also the marine environment about 250 million years ago in the area, when this limestone was formed. The herd of “Sea Lions” and the “Rocky Culture” of local people such as “rocky fence”, “rocky farm”, “rocky cultivation skill”, houses with earth compacted walls and yin-yang tile roof etc. are components of this peculiar site of the Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark.

              Just use your imagination!

You will see, right on the mountain slope beside the road to Dong Van district town, at Van Chai village, a herd of “Sea Lions”. They all apparently are crawling in one direction towards the peaceful seashore for sunbathing. Their backs seem darker and glossier under the rain and more iridescent and sparkler under the sunlight.

The herd of “Sea Lions” was created by Mother Nature from a pretty thick layer of light grey limestone, rather pure in composition in comparison to the nearby thin-bedded limestone layers. Rock composition and tectonic activities had created a system of fissures that cut perpendicularly to the bedding of limestone, thus accelerating other processes such as denudation, erosion and weathering, resulting in this unique geomorphological heritage.
